FIRST LADY OF HOLLYWOOD |
|
|
--------------------------------- Written by Cynthia Fridsma ---------------------------------
They say that nobody lives forever, but Katharine Hepburn won't be forgotten. The first lady of Hollywood past away on June 29, 2003 at the age of 96 in Old Saybrook.
Born in Connecticut, she attended Bryn Mawr College where she was an actress in college plays. In 1928 she first appeared on the stage, and in 1932 first appeared in a motion picture, A Bill of Divorcement.
She was known for her portrayal of strong women at a time when many believed that such images were box office poison. Her relationship both on- and off-screen with actor Spencer Tracy (films from 1942-1967) were a matter of some notoriety.
During her lifetime she played in more than 50 movies and won four Oscars for her acts in "Morning glory" (1933), "Guess who's coming to dinner" (1967), "The lion in winter" (1968) and "On golden pond" (1981).
The latest movie in which she appeared was in 1994 (when she was at the age of 87) and titled "Love affair".
The American president George W. Bush was on off the first to honor the Hollywood legend. He said that the American people will remember her as one of the nation's artistic treasures.

From Katharine to Julia and Sharon By ELVIS MITCHELL The lesson most modern actresses have learned at Katharine Hepburn's feet: if you refuse to bow down, the world will eventually bow down to you. (July 6, 2003)
Remembering Hepburn, Floppy Pants and All By LILLIAN ROSS Her affectations notwithstanding, Katharine Hepburn had a kind of pure Puritan strength — sure of herself, sure of her life, sure of her love. (July 2, 2003)
Bringing Up Baby By FRANK S. NUGENT Katharine Hepburn has a role which calls for her to be breathless, senseless, and terribly, terribly fatiguing. She succeeds, and we can be callous enough to hint it is not entirely a matter of performance. (March 4, 1938)
The Philadelphia Story By BOSLEY CROWTHER The way Miss Hepburn plays Tracy Lord, with the wry things she is given to say, she is an altogether charming character to meet cinematically. (Dec. 27, 1940)

Long Day's Journey Into Night By BOSLEY CROWTHER Katharine Hepburn is tricky and uneven in the difficult role of the wife and mother in this divided family — probably because she has too much to do. (Oct. 10, 1962)
On Golden Pond By VINCENT CANBY Katharine Hepburn needs someone to support, challenge and interact with. Henry Fonda is the best thing that's happened to her since Spencer Tracy and Humphrey Bogart. (Dec. 4, 1981)
